Friends of the Earth Middle East’s Amman office, together with the Australian Embassy and the Marriott Hotel, celebrated the ‘Clean up the World’ campaign at the Sharbabil Bin Hassneh EcoPark in Jordan.
The idea of Clean up the World was first initiated in 1987 by a sailor called Eyan Kirnen in Sydney, Australia. During his sailing of the seas and oceans, he noted the pollution and began with a number of friends and volunteers to clean up the Sydney Harbor after which he decided to spread the idea to the world during his travels.
FoEME in collaboration with the Australian Embassy in Amman and the Marriott hotels decided to participate in the world event by conducting a Clean Up campaign at the Sheikh Hussein EcoPark on the 18th of September 2010. 20 girls from the Qulai’at school in Sheikh Hussein community participated in the clean up along with staff from the Embassy, Marriott hotel and FoEME. All participants worked together to collect all sorts of garbage including plastic bags. Lunch prepared by the local community was served to the participants. During the bus trip back to Amman, the directors of FoEME – Amman office Mr. Munqeth and Mr. Abdel Rahman talked about the environment of the area and about our activities at the organization.
The feedback from the participants was positive and all of them enjoyed their time and had a wonderful experience.
