The Good Water Neighbors Resource Guide for Environmental Educators is the natural extension of the book, “WaterCare”. Taken together, they constitute the part of the educational program on the topic of water as a shared resource for neighboring communities.

RESOURCE GUIDE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

For the goal of our educational work in the Good Water Neighbors project, EcoPeace has written a Resource Guide for Environmental Educators with a wealth of hands-on environmental activities for youth, as well as promoting EcoPeace’s environmental peacebuilding messages.

The program includes experiential activities which allow youth of junior and senior high school ages a learning and familiarization process on topics related to the resource of water in order to promote conservation, shared responsibility and interests in regional management of this resource.

The Resource Guide is also geared at developing tolerance and openness among neighboring communities in Israel, Palestine and Jordan, and understanding the vast, inherent potential of the environment and of water as a tool of mediation and connection among these communities.

The educational process structured in the Recourse Guide aims to raise the awareness of youth to their water reality. It aims to enhance ties in the community and expand their circles to broader frames.

The learning process provides the youth with a broader perspective, learning to approach the ecological system in its natural boundaries, not those constructed by humans.

The program encourages environmental leadership and critical thinking amongst youth, and empowers them to be active and take part in the future solution to the joint problems in the regions.

Youth, during our educational program, are trained as “Water Trustees” and those who have completed a year of activities are then “Alumni Water Trustees”, and have opportunities to participate in various continual programs.

Stages of the educational process according to chapters in the Resource Guide:

Chapter 1: The Legacy of Water. In this chapter youth relate to water through their emotions, understand human dependency on water and relate to the legacy to water in their culture.

Chapter 2: Transboundary Water. In this chapter youth learn about the flowing nature of water, and therefore understand that water has not borders. Through this understanding the youth learn about the challenges posed in protecting the water sources.

Chapter 3: The Water Footprint. In this chapter youth learn about their impact on water by different uses and consumption from the local level to the global. In this chapter youth also learn to examine the different solutions for water shortages.

Chapter 4: Water and Ecosystems. In this chapter youth learn the interconnectedness of the ecosystem and its dependence on the quality and availability of water. This chapter includes a “Water Hazard Tour” in the community and a seminar teaching how to voice out a message and lead a campaign.

Chapter 5: Good Water Neighbors. This is the summary chapter in which youth learn the necessity for cooperation over water between neighbor communities and countries. In this chapter youth learn that conflict over water is an opportunity for change. They break stereotypes and change mindsets to a Win- Win paradigm. This chapter prepares youth for a cross border meeting with the neighbor community and with additional communities in the region.

The Guide was printed in Hebrew, Arabic and English and enables youth from across the region to undergo the same curriculum.

THE WATERCARE BOOK

The WaterCare curriculum consists of a Student Resource Book, a Teacher’s Guide, and a Web Page focused on water conservation issues that are regional in concept, scope, and content. The materials were prepared jointly by Jordanian, Israeli, and Palestinian educational writers and are written for students between 12 and 15 years old.

The major topics addressed by the materials include water resources, water use, water pollution, water management for conservation, and water for the future, all from a regional perspective.

EcoPeace is using the WaterCare curriculum, textbook and activities, with the youth “Water Trustees” of our Good Water Neighbors communities in addition to the Resource Guide.
