An historic Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Mayors from Israel and Jordan at North Shuneh on January 10th, 2007.
The mayors have recognized the value and importance of rehabilitating the Jordan River and have identified the potential of advancing peace through creating a cross border park.
They declared their intention to support the creation of a cross border park that will include a bird sanctuary, eco-lodges and a visitor’s center in the area of Bakoora / Naharayim / Gesher, using the infrastructure still intact at the old Rotenberg site.
The Israeli delegation was welcomed by the Governor and the mayor at both their offices where a presentation on the proposed park was given. The day also included a visit to the Bakoora area with a stunning panoramic view of the Peace Island.
Signing on the agreement were (from left to right in photo) Israeli Mayor of the Jordan Valley Regional Council, Mr. Yossi Vardi, Jordanian Mayor of Muaz Bin Jabal municipality, Eng. Abdullah Salman, and the Israeli mayor of the Beit Shean Valley Regional Council, Mr. Dani Tamari.
