Friends of the Earth Middle East’s Directors Honored by TIME Magazine as “Heroes of the Environment” 2008

Friday, September 26, 2008

TIME magazine has today awarded the three Directors of EcoPeace / Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) – Nader Khateeb (Palestinian Director), Munqeth Mehyar (Jordanian Director) and Gidon Bromberg (Israeli Director) as “Heroes of the Environment” for the year 2008.

TIME’s annual recognition of heroes spotlights the most innovative and influential activists of the planet who offer hope for the future.

The three Directors are being honored for leading environmental activism that fosters peace, most notably for promoting cooperation over the shared water resources of the region; the Lower Jordan River, the Dead Sea and the Mountain Aquifer.

EcoPeace, established in 1994, is the only regional organization bringing together Palestinian, Jordanian and Israeli environmentalists, focusing on transboundary environmental issues.

“Over the last decade, EcoPeace has succeeded to place key cross border water issues on the political agenda, locally, regionally and internationally” said Munqeth Mehyar, Jordanian Director. “Saving the Lower Jordan River and the Dead Sea should be the concern of all, since they are part of our shared human heritage”.

EcoPeace Directors join notable figures from last year’s ‘Heroes’ including former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, former Soviet Union President Michael Gorbachov, and others in their efforts to promote a sustainable tomorrow.

Nader Khateeb, Palestinian Director, said “this recognition culminates 14 years of hard work, bringing people together to better understand that their common dependence on the water they drink is connected to striking a fair peace.”

Israeli Director, Gidon Bromberg, says “actions taken today in the midst of a regional water crisis and facing the impacts of climate change will be decisive for the future possibilities to manage our shared waters sustainably. The regional vision that EcoPeace represents is needed now more than ever.”

The award winners will be publicized midnight tonight on TIME’s website. www.time.com. The International Print Edition will be on the newsstands Friday, September 26th.
